Para facilitar a compreensão das crianças, eles criaram um pequeno livro que conta a história de Josh, uma lontra bebê que aprende como se portar na água, ao qual é anexado um CD em que uma pessoa conta toda a história. Ainda para ajudar a melhor fixar a história e seus ensinamentos há também vários materiais ilustrativos, como livro para colorir, máscara de Josh, adesivo com o juramento a ser feito pelas crianças, entre outras propostas de atividades, que podem ser encontradas no website Josh The Otter | Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation. Conforme relatado por eles, até hoje, mais de 500.000 exemplares do livro já foram distribuídos, não só nos EUA como também em outros países, dentre eles o Brasil.
Nesse ano de 2022 o Rotary Club Boca Raton West decidiu também fazer sua parte. Foi então que, no dia 13 de maio, a Presidente do clube, Luciana, e a associada Bernadete, levaram o projeto aos alunos dos níveis de “Pre-Kinder” e “Kinder” da Escola French American International School, em Boca Raton.
“Quem gosta de brincar na piscina? E no mar? Vocês sabem o que fazer para estarem em segurança dentro da água?”, perguntaram para as crianças logo ao iniciar o encontro. E elas, com os olhinhos brilhando e a curiosidade desperta, respondiam com alegria e interesse a todas as perguntas.
Depois de uma instigante conversa inicial foi colocada a gravação da história “Josh, The baby Otter”, onde se ensina que as crianças só devem entrar na água se estiverem acompanhadas de um adulto, e também se estimula os pequenos a aprenderem a flutuar sobre a água, uma interessante estratégia para evitar afogamentos. Seguiram-se, então, diversas atividades, encerrando-se com uma espécie de “juramento solene”, em que cada aluno promete acatar as medidas de segurança que aprenderam com o personagem. Foi lindo!
Antes de saírem da sala, ao som da música “Learn to float”, dedicada a Josh e às suas lições sobre segurança na água, cada qual ganhou um exemplar do livro Josh the Otter, acompanhado de um CD. Dessa maneira, torna-se possível mostrar o material aos pais e sempre lembrar dos cuidados que se deve ter nessas circunstâncias.
O Rotary Club Boca Raton West espera, com isso, ajudar a salvar vidas, pois acredita que a melhor maneira de prevenir situações perigosas e dolorosas é por meio da educação e da informação.
JOSH THE OTTER PROJECT
The “Josh The Baby Otter” Project was developed by a family that lost their 2 ½-year-old son when he entered the pool alone, during a period of a few seconds when the parents were distracted. From then on, they dedicated themselves to spreading the idea that it is necessary to teach young children only to enter the water, whether in the pool, sea, lake, or river if an adult accompanies them.
To make it easier for children to understand, they created a small book, which comes with an attached CD, that tells the story of Josh, a baby otter who learns how to behave in the water. In addition, to help better establish the story and its teachings, there are also several illustrative materials, such as a coloring book, Josh’s mask, a sticker with the oath to be made by the children, and other proposals for activities, which can be found on Josh The Otter | Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation. website. As reported by the foundation, more than 500,000 copies of the book have been distributed, not only in the USA but also in other countries, including Brazil.
In the year 2022, Rotary Club Boca Raton West also decided to do its part. It was then that, on May 13, Club President Luciana and associate Bernadete took the project to students at the “Pre-Kinder” and “Kinder” levels at the French American International School in Boca Raton.
“Who likes to play in the pool? And at sea? Do you know what to do to be safe in the water?”, they asked the children right at the beginning of the meeting. And they, with their little eyes shining and their curiosity aroused, responded with joy and interest to all questions.
After a thought-provoking initial conversation, the recording of the story “Josh, The baby Otter” was played, which teaches that children should only enter the water if they are accompanied by an adult, and also encourages the little ones to learn to float in the water, which is an interesting strategy to avoid drowning. Then, several activities followed, ending with a kind of “solemn oath”, in which each student promised to abide by the security measures they learned from the character. It was beautiful!
Before leaving the room, to the sound of the song “Learn to float”, dedicated to Josh and his lessons on water safety, each child received a copy of the book Josh the Otter, accompanied by a CD. Thus, it became possible to show the material to the parents, emphasizing the need to always remember the care that must be taken in these circumstances.
The Rotary Club Boca Raton West hopes that this will help save lives, as it believes that the best way to prevent dangerous and painful situations is through education and information.

Foi professora titular da Universidade Federal do Paraná e da Escola de Música e Belas Artes do Paraná.
Pertenceu ao Rotary Club Curitiba durante mais de 20 anos, do qual foi Presidente, tendo sido a primeira mulher a ocupar esta posição, quando o clube completava 77 anos.
